They are Miguel, Dorf the Impossible, Kleine, Ulfvar, William "Big Bad Billy" Hawksmoore and Castor. The sights, smells and sounds of the city quickly overwhelmed the dwarf Dorf who quickly found his way to a sagging tavern where he bought several ales and a local specialty, grilled rat on a stick. They were low on funds, with only the weapons on their belts and the clothes on their backs. They needed money, and they needed money fast. The bartender of the Cracked Pot pointed them in the direction of the Seaside Market, where they might be able to find work - notably Kleine, who's rat catching skills could fetch them a few pennies. As they shouldered their way through the market, the mighty Norscan barbarian Ulfvar heard a scream for help. Squeezing down a narrow alleyway, Ulfvar came across a young woman apparently being beaten by a male assailant. His approach had not been noticed, so Ulfvar rose his mighty blade and prepared to slay the man in one fell swoop. His attack was spotted and the attacker managed to avoid most of it, and came at Ulfvar with a bloody dirk - apparently the woman was not being beaten, but being murdered in cold blood. The battle ended swiftly with the murderer's arm being severed, and when the man fell to the cobbled alley, a silver coin - scarred and soot-covered as though it had been through a fire - rolled out of the murderer's mouth. Hawksmoor pocketed the coin and the group moved on as not to be found standing over the dead bodies of a man and woman within only a few hours of their arrival in the city. They moved on, Kliene picking up a rat-catching contract from a local vendor, and eventually found their way to a decent boarding house just outside the walls of the Old City named //Maude's Boarding and Bathery//. Run by a crotchety old broad named Maude Pickens, they paid for the night and cleaned up, rested and had a bite to eat (turnips, cabbage and hard bread). They inquired Maude about the local pit fighting and gambling scene, and she gave them a few suggestions. As the sun set, they made their way to a local restaurant called The Diving Fin, an upscale joint that ran a few games after the dinner hour. Castor tried his hand at a few games of dice and cards while Dorf, Miguel and Ulfvar went off to find a pit fighting ring. Kleine went off on his own to look for rats, and Hawks tried to find work for the group on a ship. At a nearby fighting ring, Dorf went up against an orc while Miguel and Ulfvar bet everything they had on the dwarf. They came out on top and after a while made their way back to The Diving Fin. Meanwhile, Castor had doubled his funds and Kleine had spent his time eying a suspicious couple of characters who had slid into the restaurant from the back door. Hawks had no luck finding a ship needing deck hands. As Castor, Kleine and Hawks left the Fin, they were set upon by the suspicious characters Kleine had noticed. They claimed the group had something that belonged to them, and attacked. The two attackers were taken down, and they were surprised to see a silver coin roll out of the mouth of one of the attackers as he hit the ground. Hawks pocketed this one as well. Ulfvar, Dorf and Miguel joined them just as the fight ended, so the group scurried back to Maude's boarding house before anybody stopped them for questioning. === Session Two === The next morning, the group decided to take their winnings from the night before and treat themselves to a well-deserved luxury breakfast. They found themselves in the Seaside Market again, in a small café run by a kind-faced human. Castor had been left at the boarding house to sleep, and the rest decided to plot out how they were going to survive their stay in Freeport. The talk quickly turned to criminal enterprises, including such ideas as running a proprietor out of his shop and then selling off all his goods before burning the place down and moving on to another shop and doing the same. The prospect of these so-called "fire sales" got the group into high spirits. While this discussion went on, Hawks (now being called "Trips" by the members of the group) watched as a group of young men - street thugs by their appearance - entered the café and began roughing up the owner, and things were getting ugly. Trips pointed this out to the rest of the group, and Ulfvar took action immediately. Picking up the stool he had been sitting on, he brought it down on the back of the skull of one of them young men by the door. The fight was on, and within a minute or so the thugs were dispatched (one having his arm dispatched from his shoulder by Ulfvar's blade). Of the five thugs, three were dead and two were badly wounded but unconscious. Castor showed up towards the end of the fight, dragging one of the surviving (and escaping) thugs back into the café by the scruff of his neck. The thugs were questioned (one was killed in the process) and the group learned that they were members of a street gang called the Swollen Tongues, working for somebody named "Finn" who ran a large criminal organization called "The Syndicate". Between the thug and the indignant café owner, the group learned that Finn's Syndicate was at odds with another crime group called the Canton Crew, run by somebody named Mister Wednesday. The group kicked the last surviving member of the group out into the street, telling him to run off to Finn and tell him what happened, and that "Mister Wednesday says hello!" //n.b. The end of this fight also had the group referring to Hawksmoore as "Butters"// So the decision was made. Short term, they would prove themselves worthy to Mister Wednesday's Crew and get themselves into the criminal underworld in Freeport. Perhaps they would also manage to get themselves working for Finn and pit the two gangs against one another, in hopes that after the blood had been washed from the streets, they would be left to claim control of the one sole criminal organization operating in Freeport. A lofty goal, for sure, especially for those who stepped away from the brink of death only a day before. In the mean time, Dorf would line their pockets by competing in the pit fights for money. This, too, they hoped would get them noticed by the likes of Finn and Wednesday. Castor spent some time searching for information on Finn and Wednesday by first questioning the doddering Maude Pickens, and then hitting the streets with Kleine. The rest explored The Old City, hoping to find Wednesday's palatial estate. That evening, Dorf competed at the One Ring fights and won his round. With the day winding down, they decided to bed down for the night at an inn in The Old City, figuring that by remaining on the move any enemies they had made would have a tough time tracking them down. ===== Notable Personalities ===== **Huran Hammerfist, dwarven captain of the //Lucky Doris//** Height: 5'3" Weight: 150 lbs Hair: Ash Blond Eyes: Blue Age: 45 years Birthplace: A city in Averland Siblings: 0 Starsign: Mummit the Fool ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ **Maude Pickens, human owner of //Maude's Boarding and Bathery//** Height: 5'5" Weight: 95 lbs Hair: Gray Eyes: Green Age: 78 years Birthplace: Freeport Siblings: 0 Starsign: Cackelfax the Cockerel
